Albrecht Dürer (1471 - 1528)
Self-Portrait, 1484
Drawing on paper, 27.5 x 19.6 cm
Albertina Gallery, Vienna

This drawing is a self-portrait. It was made by a 13-year-old boy named Albrecht Dürer, who grew up to become an artist.

It is notable that according to the tradition of the time, not only the face but also the artist’s hands are depicted with special attention. Dürer is the only artist known to have drawn his self-portrait at such a young age.

Dürer was born in Nuremberg, Germany. The son of a goldsmith, Albrecht often helped his father in his workshop. That is when his extraordinary gift was recognized. The father had hoped that his son would continue the family business, but at age 15 Albrecht enrolled in the workshop of one of Nuremberg’s leading artists.
